Pilots at St. David’s

Wednesdays during term time in St. David’s Schoolroom

Deckhands: (age 4–6): 5.30–6.30 pm Adventurers: (age 7–11+): 5.30–7.00 pm

At present St. David’s holds meetings for Deckhands and Adventurers (part of the National Pilots Organisation). The meetings overlap so that all can meet together for part of the evening. The meetings are open to all children whether or not they attend Sunday worship.

The Pilots programme is flexible so that we are ale to adapt to the ages and individual needs of the children who attend Pilots meetings at St. David’s, whilst using the framework set out by Pilots.

The core elements are worship, learning and service and a meeting will usually include a selection of the following: project work, worship, music and singing, stories and drama, discovery, craft work, games, cooking, etc.

Adventurers also work for Crests (badges) in six categories, which are collected in their log books:
Praying, Interest, Learning, Overseas, Talents, Service.

Pilots: Historical Background

John Williams was a missionary who, with his wife, set out for the islands in the South Pacific. They spent many years travelling among the islands, speaking about Jesus and helping people. Although welcomed by many, they often encountered great danger and John was eventually murdered. In 1936 the London Missionary Society invited children all over Britain to save their ship halfpennies and contribute to buying a ship in John’s memory so that his work of delivering the Christian message could continue. Several ships were bought in this ways and the Pilots organisation came into being. It is now over seventy years old and still going strong.
